They were so close

Last night the Devils lost to the Montreal Canadiens 3-1. The game was an overall disappointment. Not only did the Devils play awful, but with the loss they are unable to make the playoffs, something that most of the current players are not accustomed to.

The last season the Devils didn't make the playoffs... 1996! That is 13 consecutive years the team has made the playoffs. Pretty impressive if you ask me. What I think is an even more impressive statistic: The Devils have made the playoffs 20 out of the 23 years they have been in existence in New Jersey.

They started this season out terrible (and that is an understatement). But they fought back and dug themselves out of last place in NHL. As a fan I am obviously disappointed. Most Devil fans have been saying they wished they never "gave us hope" that they would be playing for Lord Stanley's cup. Sure they took us as fans from rock bottom to an exhiliarating high, only to let us fall flat on our faces last night.

But that is the beauty of sports. We as fans get so entrhalled in our teams and their performances, we feel the pain as much as the players, if not worse. We then spend the off-season following our favorite baseball or soccer team, waiting patiently for our revenge to come around in October.

I cannot say that I wish the Devils didn't "get my hopes up" that they had a chance. I am proud of the run they made to come back from where they were. I am also convinced it is not meant to be my year in sports after my Cowboys had a bad season. But hey, both my teams fought back and ended on a good note. Until the 2011-2012 season, may the Devils playoff run R.I.P.
