"One game at a time..."

The New Jersey Devils are currently eight points behind the Buffalo Sabres for the last playoff spot. The Carolina Hurricanes, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Atlanta Thrashers stand in between. The fight for that last spot is still an uphill battle, but the Devils have come a very, very long way.

Back in early January, the Devils were last in the league and almost 30 points out of the last playoff spot. People counted them out then and were more worried about what number draft pick they would get instead. The Devils had better things in mind than a draft pick.

Their push for the playoffs started back in February. Over the past 24 games, the Devils have gone an astonishing 20-2-2. Eighteen games remain and the Devils will play nine of them home and nine of them away.

The team has not counted themselves out. They know what they need to do to make it in the playoffs and that is win.

They cannot worry if the other teams ahead of them are winning or losing because they only stand a chance if they keep up their impressive streak they are on. They need to put on their blinders and only look ahead. They need to focus on getting two points every night and hope that in the end, they will be in that eighth spot playing in the post-season.

The Devils deserve a lot of credit for their recent play. But for now, they need to keep with their motto that they have been using for the past two months: "One game at a time."
