The Rangers announced before last night's puck drop that Brandon Dubinsky was out 3-4 weeks with a left leg stress fracture. Then all this talk began of what they were going to do and who needed to do it. Oh no the leading scorer is out... boo hoo! As a Devils fan it is hard to find sympathy with the way they're season is going.
Heads then turned to Marion Gaborik and talk began on how he needs to step up and fill the hole left by Dubi's injury. Wait, the same Gaborik that head coach John Tortorella benched in second period during the 3-2 loss to the Flyers three days ago?
Gaborik is the team's top offensive threat given his eight game scoreless streak. So the answer for Tortorella to help one of his best players get out of his slump is to sit him for 17:35 of the second period. Every player has slumps and they need to play through them to get out of them. And even though Gaborik is having trouble scoring consistently, other players are stepping up. That is what needs to be done when one of the top players are in a slump. The Rangers are team and that is what teammates do.
Last night Gaborik exploded scoring four goals and adding an assist to end his night with five points - his season high for one game. I was happy for Gaborik, that was a big 'HAHA' in the face of Tortorella. Although knowing Tortorella, he probably will take all the credit and say it was his benching "message" that got to the head of Gaborik.
After a team effort on the ice Wednesday night blanking the Leafs 7-0, the Rangers will have to continue that play when they face off against the Hurricanes Thursday evening in Carolina.
As of now the absence of Dubinsky doesn't seem to be a problem. And that guy wearing number 10 on his sweater did what everyone asked, to step up his game. Now please just let the guy work on his game and work out of this slump without fingers pointing at him.
